What is the JASON Project?

A nonprofit subsidiary of the National Geographic Society, The JASON Project connects students with great explorers and great events to inspire and motivate them to learn science.

JASON works with NASA, NOAA and National Geographic to develop multimedia science curricula based on their cutting-edge missions of exploration and discovery. By providing educators with those same inspirational experiences—and giving them the tools and resources to better teach science—JASON seeks to re-energise them for a lasting, positive impact on students.

The JASON curriculum incorporates innovative classroom materials that include interactive computer-based simulations, video-on-demand, inquiry-based experiments and activities, and print materials for students and teachers. The combination is a powerful motivator for students to pursue science and related disciplines while giving them the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve solid academic gains.

Each curriculum is organised around a specific theme for a comprehensive learning experience. It may be taught as a complete package, or individual components can be selected to teach specific, outcome-based concepts. The award-winning curriculum is correlated to state outcomes for Science, and includes interdisciplinary connections to Mathematics, English, Geography and Technology.

JASON is named for the mythological Greek adventurer. Founded in 1989 by Dr. Robert Ballard, best known for his discovery of the RMS Titanic shipwreck, JASON offers students and teachers a distinctive opportunity to learn through exploration and discovery. Its use of technology to connect students with real scientists is virtually unique in education. JASON is widely recognized for its power to teach difficult concepts and to excite and engage students of diverse learning styles.
